Jennefer Hoffmann
Jennefer Hoffmann’s sculptural works are intimate, nuanced, and thought-provoking expressions of the artist’s personal interiority as well as shrewd demonstrations of her innate technical prowess. As “landscapes of memory”, the sculptures reflect the complex human desire to encapsulate a feeling into a tangible artifact – whether fleeting or one that lasts. thing to do impossible things in appears steeple-like, and formidable, akin to the conical shapes that mud dauber bees make for their nests (an inspiration from Hoffman’s time in the rural Tennessee mountains).
Beginning with clay slabs, she pinches the forms into shape using her hands, and as she observes, the process of pinching, “became my primary language over the years.” Composed of stoneware and glazes of earthy, rich hues, this monumental sculpture is large in scale and its title perhaps reflects a semblance of enduring hope amidst hardship.
