Clutha Glassware by Christopher Dresser for Liberty, London
The Clutha range, developed by Dresser and produced by James Couper & Sons (Glasgow, 1888) reveals inspiration from Roman glass, especially in the opaque, darker coloured vessels. The range was sold exclusively through Libertys London, who after a few years removed the branding from the underside etching - as was their standard practice. The earliest examples retain ‘Clutha’; the Liberty Lotus mark, ‘Designed by C.D.’, and ‘Registered’ as can be witnessed on some pieces in the above collection.
