Millefiori Vase
Millefiori (mille = thousand, fiori = flower) is an Italian glassware technique. Though millefiori beads dating back as early as the 6th century have been found throughout Europe, many archaeologically preserved millefiori glass beads and canes (murrine) of ancient Rome originated in the 8th century. The labor-intensive technique was revived in the 19th century, and millefiori enjoyed popularity in paperweights, beads, tableware and drinking vessels. This exquisite Murano vase was made around 1920. The vessel’s sandy body is speckled with delicate and subtle golden flecks and punctuated with millefiori motifs of varying sizes, shapes and brilliant colors.
