Dutch Frisian Stoel Clock
Frisian clocks were made in the Friesland province of the Netherlands as early as the 16th century, and are beloved by decorative arts and timepiece collectors alike. This fanciful clock was made in the 18th century, and features an elaborately decorated face, painted with architectural elements and natural flora. The carved wooden hands are shaped in the form of abstract animals or even monsters, with gaping mouths and wide eye sockets. Painted in colors of the vegetal variety – spruce, indigo, madder, yarrow and chestnut – the clock face is surrounded by an intricately hewn gold leaf surround. The gleaming frieze is topped with a crown, a clock befitting of a royal.
