Painted Bride Box

Not Attributed

This vibrant 19th century painted bentwood bride box is most likely of Pennsylvania German origin. Enveloped in celestial lapis, it is adorned with cream roses and vibrant crimson freesia flowers, which trail the outside of the box. The lid is framed by a vermilion border, and at its center is a handpainted bucolic and convivial scene of men and women enjoying a picnic and glasses of wine in a verdant garden, perhaps a cheeky ode to le déjuener sur l’herbe. Beautiful handpainted calligraphy in German trails the curve of the perimeter.
