This exquisitely hand carved sideboard was made in Belgium in the 17th century. Flemish furniture of this time was characterized by elaborate carving and ornamentation, appearing quite substantial like its Baroque style counterparts in other parts of Europe. Its panels are adorned with hand carved fantastical grotesques, angels, monsters, and vegetal elements. Though decorative, the cabinet exhibits a sense of restraint in its scale and presence, eschewing the popular “Flemish foot” in favor of a simple and straight base.
