Toshiko Takaezu
Toshiko Takaezu was one of the most important American ceramic artists of the 20th century. Perhaps most well known for her “moon pots”, she experimented with large closed form vessels, eschewing functionality in favor of a more sculptural and conceptual exploration. Takaezu made this beautiful set of glazed porcelain tea bowls in 1985, inspired by the mingei pottery she encountered on her travels throughout Japan. The simplicity of their forms demonstrates her shrewd talent and careful restraint as a potter and an artist.
