Wonky Pip

Face-in-Hole boards (also known as peep boards) are typically slapdash paintings on plywood, punctured with holes sized for a face and weighed down with sandbags. Historically they are seen at seaside tourist destinations, a corn maze or strawberry festival, on a boardwalk, or any place with a whiff of a carnival. For PLAY!, artist and illustrator Joana Avillez created these works as a way to punctuate and activate the gallery space while allowing for a cheeky and mischievous way in which to interact with the exhibition. The three boards in PLAY! are all directly inspired by other works in the exhibition. Trenchcoat Trick references Ettore Sottsass’s Synthesis 45 Coat Rack, while Wonky Pip alludes to the cigarette case adorned with “vices”. Last but not least, the diminutive Four-Legged Fruit draws from the collection of silver betel boxes and is the perfect scale for a dog or cat, kneeling child or a particularly adventurous adult!
