Corner Cabinet In Curly Maple
Doug McCollough pays homage to the craftsman, designer, educator, author and friend, Andy D. Glenn, by reimagining Glenn’s Queen Anne bookcase as a wall-mounted corner cabinet. By flattening the volume of the original into a facade, the cabinet’s appearance reduces to the size of a painting. Composed of curly maple and alder, it appears to float off the wall at eye level and as such, becomes an object that lives among the surrounding artwork as much as the domestic furnishings. Key elements of the Queen Anne vocabulary are preserved and subtly transformed. For example, its feet hover freely in space, their sculptural profiles celebrated rather than concealed. Relieved of its original function of support, the cabinet invites an unexpected intimacy: viewers are encouraged to approach, touch – even caress – the floating object in space.
