Collection of Silver Betel Boxes
This special collection includes seven Cambodian silver boxes dating to the 20th century, accompanied by a unique silver seashell. Each container is delicately shaped in the form of tropical fruits — mango, star fruit, coconut, peppers, eggplant, and mangosteen — demonstrating thoughtful attention to naturalistic detail. These boxes were historically used for storage and transport of betel nut (a popular stimulant), including areca nut, betel leaf, and lime paste, which was integral to the traditional social practice of betel chewing throughout Southeast Asia.
