Glasgow School Runner
This Glasgow School runner is attributed to Templeton’s Glasgow, an important carpet and textile manufacturer established in Glasgow in 1839. The rug reflects the synthesis of craft tradition and industrial production, a defining characteristic of Scottish design at the turn of the 20th century. Machine-woven in wool, the vertically oriented pattern is composed of stylized, abstract, rhythmic and geometric forms. The patterning, as well as the natural, earthy tones of celery and peony-pink are reminiscent of the Arts & Crafts movement, but its modern manufacturing techniques enabled wider commercial distribution.
