Sussex Chair Dressing
Ruffles, scrunches, and gathered organza. This is how Dickson-Okuda choses to veil the historical Sussex chair (based on a regional stick back chair, produced by Morris & Co. c. 1870), as if listening to the chairs' needs when asked how best to preserve and adorn them. While the exaggerated train of silk and overstuffed armature might contradict the Arts and Crafts icon it dresses, the playful sheerness highlights the craftsmanship and transforms its silhouette to something entirely different. This outfit consists of a seat cushion with an extended train of silk, which can either wrap underneath the chair or trail behind into the room dramatically. Paired with the long cover is a series of black taffeta scrunchies: one over-scaled for the back of the chair, and four smaller – one for each foot.
