Large Footstool
This substantially large American footstool was made around 1840. It features a robust mahogany frame shaped in an ogee profile, which rests upon metal casters for versatility. The spring-loaded needlepoint cushion is oversized – almost cartoonesque in scale – suggesting a mischievous interpretation of traditional furniture forms. Though seemingly evocative of classic mid-19th century American furniture, its sheer size makes it a humorous conversational piece in its own right.
