Japanese Lacquer Bento Box Set
Bento boxes, or shokado-bento, have existed as a part of Japanese culture for centuries, originally used to pack meals for travel. Traditional lacquerware, known as urushi, is made from the sap of the lacquer tree, a process that has been refined for over a thousand years. This set of mid-20th century Japanese stacking bento boxes is made of smooth, soft wood. The exterior is finished with an orange lacquer finished with a speckled pattern, and its interior exhibits the same lacquer in a rich tomato-red hue. These mid-20th century bento boxes include two tops, allowing for a diverse range of combinations of use.
