French Tole Tray
This round tole painted tray dates to the 19th century, and exemplifies the decorative refinement of the French Empire style. Painted tole, also known as “tinware”, was very popular in France during the 19th century, and praised for its affordability and durability without the sacrifice of its ornamental appeal. Finished in a vivid chartreuse enamel, the surface features black transfer-printed vignettes arranged in classical compositions, characteristic of the period’s Neoclassical influence. The tray has cut-out handles integrated on either side for ease of use.
