This exquisite chair exhibits the typical visual vernacular of the Victorian time period through its shape and ornate details, but is unique in its unexpected material – papier-mâché. With this process, the chair is created through building layer upon layer of paper with a paste made from flour and water. It is then lacquered in deep onyx, and ornately decorated in mother of pearl and gold leaf in expressive patterns.
