Corner Chair
H.W. Batley (1846-1932) was a British Aesthetic Movement artist and designer, who perhaps has not received the acclaim he so deserves. Throughout his career, he designed furniture, textiles, wallpapers and carpets. His works were included in several noteworthy World Fairs, such as the Philadelphia Centennial in 1876 and the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878. This corner chair is a wonderful example of the Aesthetic Movement style, in its sumptuous exploration not of functionality but beauty, and “art for art’s sake”. The golden oak wood is upholstered with rivets, and the wool textile depicts a romantic floral pattern, one that Batley most likely designed himself.
