Afra & Tobia Scarpa
This cheerful turquoise “Vanessa Bed” was designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa and manufactured by Gavina in 1959. An icon of Italian design, the bed is made of powder coated steel, with an intricately conceived mattress platform, made from rubber and metal springs. Afra and Tobia Scarpa were both renowned Italian architects and designers, whose partnership spanned many years and produced fruitful collaborations in the way of product design and commercial interiors like Benetton stores. Their work explored new technologies and methodologies for making, and they became important figures in the evolving landscape of Italian design.
