ILONKA KARASZ

Born in Hungary and raised in the United States, Ilonka Karasz was a multidisciplinary artist and designer perhaps most well known for her New Yorker illustrations. Along with her prolific work in illustration and then textile design, Karasz began making furniture, and was greatly influenced by the Dutch De Stijl’s visual vernacular. In 1928, she was one of the few women to participate in the American Designers’ Gallery in New York City, exhibiting her interior design prowess and furniture works alongside fifteen of the most influential designers in the country. This cherrywood chair was designed for that exhibition, and illustrates an American design sensibility that was showcased for the first time.
