Painted Tole and Brass Chandelier
Made in the 1930s, this Italian tole and brass chandelier features a rich reddish ground with gilt accents. The central bowl is painted with foliate motifs, including acanthus leaves and acorn forms, drawn from classical decorative ornament. From this core, scrolling arms extend outward in a branching arrangement that supports candle-style lights fitted with red shades trimmed in gold. Above, curved uprights rise in a restrained neoclassical rhythm, demonstrating a precision and restraint that is unusual for the more flamboyant style of Italian 20th century design.
