Painted Child's Armchair
This 19th-century child’s chair is from Pennsylvania, but is quite reminiscent of Tyrolean furniture from the Alps. The form itself is simple, as straight arms and square supports establish a clear, utilitarian structure. Layered color and floral pattern animate the surface, giving an almost textile-like quality to a miniature piece of furniture. The combination of simple, sturdy construction and lively decoration reflects an interest in bringing ornament and color into even the most functional, everyday forms.
