This beautiful antique Romanian Bessarabian Kilim, woven most likely in the 1920s, features a warm, chocolate ground and incorporates three romantic pastoral vignettes. Lush red roses, delicate white blooms and mirrored bouquets complement an abstracted narrative in the rug’s center, with a man and a woman conversing over a fence. Bessarabian Kilims originate in the historical region of Bessarabia, which includes parts of modern-day Moldova, Ukraine, and Romania. While this historical weaving displays motifs inspired by European examples (such as those from Aubusson France), its vivid colors and arrangements are unique to the traditions of the region.
