Somewhere Tonight

This work exists in dialogue with the new wall hanging works by Ernesto Burgos presented in the artist's current solo exhibition at Fernberger, Los Angeles. Constructed from sheets of cardboard saturated with resin, the sculptural grounds are shaped into forms that project from the wall, creating supports that are at once structural and pictorial.

Working with oil, oil stick, and charcoal, Burgos developed this composition in response to the contours of the support. The relationship between image and form reorganizes itself as the viewer moves around the object, continually renewing the experience of the work. Burgos's sculptural paintings resist definitive readings not because they are unresolved, but because they refuse to exhaust themselves in a single encounter.
