Dancing Bones

When constructing one of her signature abstract compositions, Anne Wehrley Björk begins with what she calls "the bones"; dark, nearly black calligraphic forms that establish the underlying architecture of her paintings. She describes the subsequent gestures, marks, and passages of color as being "hung" upon this skeletal framework. In her new works, Chicken Foot and Dancing Bones, Björk playfully traverses the boundary between biomorphism and pure abstraction. Inspired by Joan Mitchell, she activates the negative space of the canvas, transforming it into a dynamic field of gesture, color, and movement, where absence becomes as expressive as form.
