Flying Back Home #1567 (Diptych)

Flying Back Home #1567 (Diptych) (2024) belongs to Vicky Colombet's ongoing Plis et Paysage (Folds and Landscape) series, begun in 2015. Executed on raw linen, the blue and black paintings in the series explore folding as both a formal and conceptual structure.

The title Flying Back Home refers to Colombet's frequent flights between Paris and New York, and the aerial perspectives they afforded of the fractured coastlines on either side of the Atlantic. Looking down from the airplane, the artist became interested in the movement of the sea and in the ways landscape could be understood through topographical folds and shifting planes.

Colombet has remarked that she does not make paintings of landscapes, but rather that her paintings constitute landscapes themselves. Flying Back Home #1567 is one of the few diptychs the artist has made, allowing the composition to extend beyond the viewer’s visual field, creating an immersive experience.
