Ernesto Burgos (b. 1979, Santa Clara, CA, raised in Chile) lives and works in New York, New York. He received a BFA from California College of the Arts in San Francisco in 2004 and an MFA from New York University in 2008. Burgos’s work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and internationally. His practice manipulates industrial materials including cardboard, fiberglass and resin to create gravity-defying sculptures that capture fleeting moments of motion suspended in space. Through a process of bending, cutting and adhesive manipulation, initial abstractions evolve into fully realized three-dimensional forms, while traces of their making remain visible in the finished works. Burgos’s tactile approach, which often resembles sculptural painting, serves as a vehicle for exploring transformation, mark-making, movement, and material intervention. As viewers move around the work, each composition shifts and unfolds, altering its perceived spatial dimensions and revealing new relationships between form and perspective. This dynamic interplay heightens the complexity of the gestural movements embedded within each piece, inviting reflection on the fluid dialogue between perception and objecthood. Burgos is perhaps best known for his shield-like wall works that occupy a space between painting and sculpture. In recent years, however, he has expanded his practice to include cast bronze sculpture, translating the formal language of his fiberglass and paper constructions into fully three-dimensional forms.

His work is included in the public collection of Kunstmuseum Magdeburg, Germany. He will be the subject of a solo exhibition at Fernberger, Los Angeles in September, 2026.
