Elliot Camarra
Elliot Camarra’s “Grape Soft Sculpture”, is a monumental work that was meticulously and thoughtfully hand-stitched, comprising a combination of velvet remnants, scraps and ribbons from the 1910s-1940s, as well as contemporary silk and cotton velvet. The sculpture intends to reclaim materials and techniques traditionally coded as female, such as millinery, domestic sewing and upholstery, and elevates them to the realm of art.
In this work, Camarra sees a symbol with long-term cross-cultural salience (e.g. the palaces of ancient Egypt, the iconography of ancient Greece), and repeats that symbol as both meaning-making and monument-making.
