Chair Considerations in Collaboration with Phillip Webb for William Morris

Kristin Dickson-Okuda

Kristin Dickson-Okuda’s Chair Dressings adorn a pair of historical Sussex Chairs produced by Morris & Co (c. 1870), unique because of their unusual high backs. This iteration prizes texture and references fashion, with padded silk belts with batting, an iridescent beaded pearl necklace and delicate bracelets, framed ribbon trim and layered organza to mimic flower petals or a watery surface. Dickson-Okuda employs a more neutral color palette like cornflower and inky-blue, reminiscent of those hues popular with French royalty and courtesans in the 17th and 18th centuries.

These odes to historicism are playfully complemented with theatrical interventions like angora wool leg sleeves and taffeta ruffles, further demonstrating the artist’s preoccupation with expressions of the garment.
