Early Chintz & Floral Quilt

Not Attributed

This early 19th century heirloom chintz and floral quilt boasts masterful handwork. The original glazing, typical of British cotton textiles of the period, imbues the quilt with a subtle sheen that has gradually become matte. The top is composed of patchworked blocks, and indigo and umber foliage are framed by a trumpeting ripple of florals – olivine to mahogany – embellished with cerulean moments. The outer frame is a panel of block printed organic motifs that introduces shades of amaranth, lapis, ochre and cyan.

The integrity of the textile is showcased through its minimal discoloration and pristinely maintained exterior. The cut outs on the bottom corners show that the quilt was to be placed on a thoughtfully made bed.
