Greta Waller (b. 1983, Indianapolis, IN) lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. Working in oil paint, Waller meditates on states of change, attending to moments of transition when perception remains provisional. Through close observation, shifts of light, color, and form emerge before the subject fully congeals, allowing forms to momentarily loosen from their referents and move toward abstraction.

Waller steps back from her subjects in order to paint them, bypassing the impulse to interpret and moving directly from eye to hand. Metaphor and poetic association arrive after the fact, left to the viewer. Having worked as a paramedic alongside her artistic career, Waller is drawn to the Dutch vanitas tradition and its attention to the ephemeral nature of life. Her paintings ask us to remain with the act of seeing, allowing form to emerge and reorganize itself before meaning settles what is still in motion.

Waller presented a solo exhibition at Fernberger in 2025. Recent group exhibitions include ALL OF US, curated by Tony Payne, Phillips, Los Angeles (2026); the host, the guest, curated by Nichole Caruso, ATLA, Los Angeles (2026); Elemental Hours, Slip-House, New York (2026); and The Art of Oscar, curated by Michael Slenske, Megan Mulrooney, Los Angeles (2026).

Waller received her BFA from Cooper Union and her MFA from UCLA, and has also studied at Pratt Institute, the New York Academy of Art, the Slade School of Fine Art, and Chelsea College of Arts. Her awards include the Art Purchase Program at the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2017) and the Young Talent Award from the Washington Art Association (2008).
